Race Results – 4 December 2021
Seven Historic 18s opened the Club Championship and Summer Point Score in a gusty 20 to 25 knot southerly. The Mistake led around Clark Island, while Britannia filled up after an incident with Aberdare.
SFS Race Report Sat 4th December 2021 by Bob Chapman, 6 Dec 2021. Race 6 of the 2021-22 Season, Race One of the Club Championship and Heat One of the Summer Point Score. Another Saturday another southerly, this time fresh and gusty with overcast skies. Seven Historic 18s were on hand to prepare for the day’s racing along with a fleet of 12ft skiffs to contest the first race of their NSW Championship. No.3 rig was the popular choice by all skiffs in consideration the breeze may build during the afternoon.

The race got underway from a well contested scratch start in Athol Bight on the no.4 South course into a 20-25kt southerly, about an hour before low tide. The Mistake did well from the boat-end while Yendys also started well from the pin-end. The skiffs stayed on the favoured starboard tack for as long as possible in the fresh conditions. An incident occurred when Aberdare tacked onto port wherein Britannia was forced to take Aberdare’s stern but then snagged the end of Aberdare’s boom to be spun around and suffer a terminal fill-up. Aberdare did a penalty turn.

The Mistake was first to round Clark Island for the square run to Chowder followed by Yendys, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Scot and Aberdare. The Mistake set a small mast-head spinnaker to enjoy a fast ride down the run, while Australia IV set a peak-head spinnaker to enjoy some fast moments and move into 2nd place. The Mistake was first to round at Chowder for the beat up to Shark Island into a very fresh breeze followed by Australia IV, Yendys, Tangalooma, Scot and Aberdare. Plenty of wind for all skiffs as they battled their way up to Rose Bay. Fortunately not a lot of water traffic to contend with in these testing conditions, although The Mistake did manage to get caught up with a large (and over-canvassed) yacht on approach to the top mark, all part of the challenge. The Mistake was first to round Shark Island for the long reach back to Kurraba, followed by Australia IV,
Tangalooma, Aberdare and Scot. Unfortunately, Yendys had a bad tack when setting-up for their approach to the top mark and suffered a terminal fill-up.

The remaining five skiffs had a fast 2-sail reach back to Kurraba. The Mistake was first to round at Kurraba for the final beat up to Clark Island with a good lead from Australia IV, Tangalooma, Aberdare and Scot. Still plenty of breeze to keep skippers and crews on their toes, and no change in positions. The Mistake was first to round Clark Island for the run to the finish, sailing under main and jib only, to finish 9 mins ahead of Australia IV, then a couple of mins to Tangalooma, Aberdare (under spinnaker) and a gap to Scot. Aberdare subsequently retired after the finishing the race.
