Mark Foy Day opened the delayed 2021-22 season after the COVID-19 lockdown, with five skiffs racing Spring Point Score Heat 1 on the SE course in a puffy 12 to 18 knot south-easterly.

SFS Race Report Sat 30th October 2021 by Bob Chapman, 1 Nov 2021. Mark Foy Day - Race 1 of the 2021-22 Season and Heat One of the Spring Point Score. After a long winter break under COVID-19 Lockdown and with the recent easing of NSW health regulations, the SFS Sailing Season finally got off to a delayed start. Unfortunately, the circumstances during the offseason meant that maintenance for some skiffs was impacted and it will take a while until all skiffs and crews are ready to get back on the water. In addition, essential maintenance to the club’s outdoor deck/wharf area has provided another set of challenges for utilizing the boatshed space that may be in-play for some time to come. Plenty of activity in the boat park with 7 skiffs on hand. Team Tangalooma were pre-occupied with maintenance tasks and unable to race, Top Weight rigged but was unable to sail, leaving 5 skiffs preparing to race. The breeze was fresh from the south with the air temperature cooling down after the previous day’s “spring heatwave”. Some skiffs suffered from delays in their preparation and were running late to launch. After a postponement of 15 mins, the race got underway from a handicap start off Robinson’s Pt. on the no.3, SE course into a 12-18 kt south-easterly breeze that was quite puffy and swinging in direction. Not much traffic on the waterway, limited to some small yacht fleets and some dinghy activity, making for ideal conditions in regard to congestion. Aberdare off 15 mins was first skiff away but missed their start by a minute or two, with next skiff Australia IV off 5 mins, then The Mistake off 1 min and Yendys off Scr. Scot made it to the course area about the same time the back markers were preparing to start, but did not cross the start line and headed upwind to Clark Island. Aberdare was first to round Clark Island for the reach to Taylor Bay with a long gap to the chasing skiffs with Australia IV next skiff to round followed by Yendys and The Mistake. Scot followed. No change in positions at Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island into some good breeze, great sailing conditions, albeit a bit cool. Aberdare was first to round at Shark Island for the free run back to Kirribilli, with the back markers enjoying some close racing and having made up considerable time on the leader. Scott followed but was well back.

The skiffs enjoy a good run back to Kirribilli. Photo courtesy Adrienne Jackson. Aberdare sailed a high course for the run to Kirribilli while the following skiffs sailed a more direct line. As the skiffs approached the Kirribilli rounding mark it would appear that Aberdare had been heading for a different/higher mark, giving up the lead in the process. Yendys was first to round at Kirribilli for the beat to Clark Island followed by Australia IV, The Mistake and then Aberdare. Scot completed their “training” run and returned to the SFS. Yendys was first to round Clark Island for the run to the finish off Kurraba Pt. followed by The Mistake, Australia IV and Aberdare. Yendys set a ringtail, extending their lead in the process to go on for a comfortable win from The Mistake, Australia IV and Aberdare.
