Eight skiffs raced Spring Point Score Heat 3 on the West course in a variable 10 to 15 knot westerly against the tide, with Alruth first to Kurraba Point after a testing opening beat.

SFS Race Report Sat 29th October 2022 by Bob Chapman, 31 Oct 2022. Race 3 of the 2022-23 Season and Heat Three of the Spring Point Score. Pleasant warm and sunny conditions prevailed in the boat park with the breeze from the west, following from the previous day’s fresh and gusty westerly. There were 8 skiffs preparing to race and 2 skiffs sitting idle without crew. Rigs were a mix between full-size intermediate and the smaller no.3 configuration; while the breeze appeared to be variable and somewhat inconsistent. After a 15 minute delay, the race got underway from a handicap start off Athol Bight on the no.5, West course into a variable 10-15 kt westerly, run-out tide and a busy waterway in lieu of the pleasant onwater conditions. Tangalooma was first skiff away off 16 mins, followed by Alruth and Britannia (15), Scot and Australia IV (12), Australia (8), The Mistake (1) and Yendys on scratch. Conditions up the first beat to Kurraba Point were testing, working against the tide with the wind-strength up and down and changing direction, whilst sharing the wind/water resources with the yacht fleet using marks in close proximity. Alruth was first to round at Kurraba for the square run to Point Piper, followed by Australia IV, Britannia, Scot, Tangalooma, Yendys, The Mistake and Australia. The run to Point Piper was very square with some skiffs unable to hold course directly to the mark.

After rounding the Point Piper mark, Alruth and Australia IV continued their tussle on the beat back up to Kurraba Point. This was a testing leg in the variable breeze, yacht traffic and strong run-out tide, with a variety of strategies deployed, wherein Britannia and Yendys passed to the south of Clark Island before tacking onto port off Garden Island to cross the harbour. Meanwhile, The Mistake was making good progress upwind until caught in a maelstrom of pleasure craft, charter boats and ferry traffic off Fort Denison, slowing their progress considerably.

Alruth was first to round at Kurraba for the run to Clark Island followed by Australia IV, Britannia, Yendys, The Mistake, Scot, Australia and Tangalooma. The skiffs enjoyed a good spinnaker ride across to Clark Island, but no change in positions. The skiffs turned at Clark Island for final leg back

to Kurraba and after negotiating the lee behind the island settled in for another challenging beat to the finish. Alruth maintained their lead to finish a minute ahead of Australia IV, with Yendys sailing an impressive last beat making up time to finish third, then Britannia, The Mistake and a close finish for Tangalooma, Scot and Australia.
