Race Results – 29 January 2022

Nine skiffs contested the final, deciding race of the Australian Championship in a 14 to 18 knot nor'easter off Double Bay, with The Mistake best away from the scratch start and first to the Beashel Buoy.

SFS Race Report Sat 29th January 2022 by Bob Chapman, 31 Jan 2022. Race 12 of the 2021-22 Season and Race Three of the Australian Championship. Hot and humid conditions in the boat park as nine skiffs prepared for the final and deciding race of the H18 Australian Championship. A gradient breeze from the NE was in by midday and expected to build during the afternoon but just how much was uncertain. The majority of skiffs decided on no.3 rig configuration while Yendys and The Mistake opted for no.2 mainsail and no.3 jib.

The race got underway from a scratch start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE Course, into a 14-18kt NE breeze and the early stage of a run-in tide. In addition, there was plenty of dinghy, keelboat and yacht racing underway on the harbour along with recreational users making for some bumpy water and congestion in some areas. The Mistake was best away off a short start line from the start boat end with Aberdare and Tangalooma also well positioned off the line, while Yendys adopted a conservative approach and started well back from the line.

The skiffs enjoyed a solid work into a mostly fresh breeze albeit with the occasional patch of soft air and bumpy water on the beat down harbour. The Mistake was first to round the Beashel Buoy for the square run to Shark Island followed by Yendys, then Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Tangalooma and Myra Too. Unfortunately Aberdare suffered a terminal fill-up during a tack off Chowder Bay while Scot retired towards the later stages of the beat. The Mistake was first to gybe at Shark Island for the run to Clark Island followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Myra too and Tangalooma. The Mistake enjoyed a fast run down to Clark

Island under peak-head spinnaker to extend their lead to round first for the beat up to Chowder Bay, with no change in positions apart from Tangalooma moving back into 6th place ahead of Myra Too.

No change in conditions for the last beat with the two lead skiffs comfortable under no.2 mainsail. The Mistake was first to round at Chowder to set a peak-head spinnaker for the run to Shark Island followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Tangalooma and Myra Too. The Mistake went on to gybe first at Shark Island and set a ringtail for the final run to the finish to cross first about 3 mins ahead of Yendys (ringtail), then Australia IV (ringtail), Top Weight (ringtail), Tanagalooma, Britannia (2nd ringtail for the day) and Myra Too. The handicap was won by The Mistake from Britannia, with Top Weight 3rd to ensure their overall handicap win for the Raw Meat Trophy from Yendys and Britannia. Yendys 2nd place on AHSSA Rating ensured their first overall position for the Galloping Ghost Trophy from The Mistake and Top Weight. Well done all crews, race officials and supporters.
