SFS Race Report Sat 28th January 2023 by Bob Chapman, 30 Jan 2023. Race 12 of the 2022-23 Season and Heat Five of the Summer Point Score. Five skiffs were on hand for today’s race with some absentees due to other sailing commitments. The weather was typically very hot for peak summer with the prospect of a fresh Nor’easter. All skiffs elected to use their no.3 rig in anticipation of a lively day of sailing on the harbour. For today’s race the H18s would be sharing the waterway with the modern 18s running their Australian C’ship along with the usual harbour yacht club racing now back in full swing. The race got underway from a handicap start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a solid 16-18 knot NE’er with an easterly influence and the beginning of the run-out tide. Britannia was first skiff away off 17 mins, followed by Tangalooma (15), Australia (9), Australia IV (6) and Yendys off scratch. All skiffs were well-rigged and setup for the conditions but faced some challenges in navigating the harbour chop and additional traffic on the long beat down to the Beashel Buoy.

Britannia leads the way from Tanaglooma on first run.

Britannia was first to round the Beashel Buoy for the free run to Shark Island, followed by Tangalooma, Australia IV, Australia and Yendys. The skiffs enjoyed a fast ride down this run. Britannia was first to round at Shark Island where they dropped the spinnaker for a granny turn then re-set the spinnaker for the run to Clark Island while Tangalooma also grannied and ran under main & jib. Meanwhile, Australia IV followed, dropped their spinnaker to granny at the mark while Yendys gybed their spinnaker to sail inside Australia IV and move into 3rd place.

All good on the Yendys negotiating the harbour wash.

Britannia was first to round at Clark Island for the beat up to Chowder Bay with Tangalooma now close at hand, then a gap to Yendys, Australia IV and Australia. The breeze had freshened at this stage with the run-out tide well underway making for some bouncy upwind sailing. Tangalooma

moved into the lead on this beat to round first at Chowder for the shy run to Shark Island followed closely by Britannia, then a gap to Yendys, Australia IV and Australia.

Tangalooma was first to Shark Island under main & jib, and after rounding the mark set a spinnaker to enjoy a fast run to the finish followed by Britannia, then a 6 min gap to Yendys, Australia IV and a further gap to Australia. Well done all skiffs and crews for managing the conditions on the day.
