Race Results – 27 November 2021
Six skiffs faced a gusty 20 to 30 knot southerly for Spring Point Score Heat 5, with small rigs the order of the day, Britannia leading early and Australia IV retiring with jib sheet trouble.
SFS Race Report Sat 27th November 2021 by Bob Chapman, 29 Nov 2021. Race 5 of the 2021-22 Season and Heat Five of the Spring Point Score. Rather bleak, cold and windy conditions in the boat park as six skiffs prepared for the days racing in between the odd shower of rain. Small rigs were the order of the day with a gusty southerly on hand compliments of a low pressure system off the coast. The race got underway from a handicap start in Athol Bight on the no.4 South course into a 20-30kt southerly, just as the tide began to run-out with the added assistance of run-off from recent heavy rain. Limit skiffs Britannia and Aberdare were first away off 15 mins, followed by Scot (13), then Australia IV (8) all snug under no.4 rig, with Yendys and The Mistake starting together off scratch both under no.3 rig. Very challenging conditions for all crews and fortunately due to the adverse conditions they had the harbour to themselves, with the skiffs under no.4 rig looking reasonably comfortable while the two back markers had their work cut-out going upwind.

Britannia was first to Clark Island for the square run to Chowder followed by Aberdare, Scot in close company then a gap to The Mistake and Yendys. Australia IV retired on the first leg with jib sheet issues. The lead group of skiffs did not set a spinnaker down the first run while The Mistake enjoyed a fast ride under a small spinnaker to make up time. Yendys’ race came to an end after a big roundup became a terminal fill-up. Britannia was first to round at Chowder for the beat up to Shark Island with no change in positions for the four skiffs still in the race. Very testing conditions on the beat up to Rose Bay with Scot moving into the lead to be first to round Shark Island followed by Britannia, Aberdare and then The Mistake.
No spinnakers for the long run back to Kurraba, main and jib only, and at times a very quick ride. Scot pulled ahead to increase their lead while The Mistake with bigger rig ran deeper and made up a lot of time on the approach to the mark.

Scot was first to round at Kurraba with a good lead for the beat up to Clark Island from Abedare, The Mistake and Britannia in a close group. After a hard up-wind slog, no changes to positions as Scot rounded Clark Island first for the run back to the finish off Kurraba Point, followed by Aberdare, The Mistake and Britannia. Scot enjoyed a fast run to the finish under main and jib to score another win, this time by a minute from The Mistake after an exciting run under small spinnaker, then Aberdare and Britannia. Well done to all crews and volunteers. With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Stewart, Chuck and Michael, COVID Marshall Nicki, crew doco / sign-in team of Tomoko and Renata. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next week.
