Race Results – 26 March 2022
Six skiffs raced Autumn Point Score Race 5 on the SE course in a moderate ESE breeze with passing rain, with Top Weight first away and leading the fleet around the early marks.
SFS Race Report Sat 26th March 2022 by Bob Chapman, 28 March 2022. Race 20 of the 2021-22 Season and Race Five of the Autumn Point Score. Six skiffs were on hand for today’s race, with some crew from the non-sailing skiffs filling-in on others as a shortage of available crew continues to be an issue. The boat park is still in a sorry and soggy state but at least the grass has been cut. The breeze was from the south east, moderate and variable with numerous rain cells rolling-in along the coast, affecting the wind speed and direction. Sail selections appeared to be a mix of big sails or full size no.2 rigs. The race got underway from a handicap start off Robinson’s Point on the No.3 SE Course into a moderate ESE breeze and small run-in tide. Top Weight on port tack from the pin-end was first skiff away off 13 mins, then Scot and Tangalooma (12), Britannia (11), Australia IV (9) and Yendys off scratch. The breeze was in the east on this leg with the skiffs laying-up to Clark Island on port tack for most of the leg, with all skiffs enjoying good breeze albeit with yacht racing traffic to negotiate.

Top Weight was first to round at Clark Island for the tight reach to Taylor Bay followed by Scot, Australia IV, Tangalooma, Britannia and Yendys. All skiffs sailed this leg under main & jib with no change in positions while the skiffs under bigger sails making some gains. Top Weight was first to round at Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island with a useful lead from Scot, then Australia IV, Tangalooma, Britannia and Yendys. The breeze was back in the south east at this stage with Top Weight making good time up to Rose Bay and keeping a loose over on Scot. After rounding at Taylor Bay Yendys was able to capitalise on and easterly shift in the breeze and sail a more direct leg on port tack up to Rose Bay.

Top Weight was first to round at Shark Island for the square run back to Kurraba, followed by Scot, Australia IV, Tangalooma, Yendys and Britannia. With the breeze moving back towards the east this run became very square and with the run-in tide the lead skiffs on port gybe could not sail deep enough to hold course directly to the mark at Kurraba. The lead skiffs sailed a course towards Fort Denison before dropping their spinnaker, gybing over and reaching into the bottom mark under main & jib. Meanwhile, Yendys sailed towards Clark Island and gybed their spinnaker to approach the bottom mark on an ideal angle under spinnaker and make up considerable time on the lead group, while Britannia set a ringtail.

Top Weight was first to round at Kurraba for the beat up to Clark Island with a good lead from Scot, Australia IV, Yendys, Tangalooma and Britannia. The skiffs enjoyed good sailing conditions and little harbour traffic up the final beat with Yendys moving into the podium positions. Top Weight continued to hold a good lead to round first at Clark Island for the run to the finish followed by Yendys, Scot, Australia IV, Tangalooma and Britannia. The skiffs enjoyed a fast run to the finish under starboard pole spinnaker with Top Weight first to finish 2 mins clear of Yendys (ringtail), Scot, Australia IV (ringtail), Tangalooma and Britannia (ringtail).
