Commodore Terry Stewart reports on Spring Series Heat 6 from Australia IV, where Alruth showed fine upwind speed and a brave late gybe to hold off Australia IV at the finish in wet, building NE conditions.
Heat 6 of the Spring Series from the Australia IV point of view Five starters were met with overcast and wet conditions and NE breeze forecast to build. Rig selection differed from full number 2 to a reef and number 3. Australia IV chose a full number 2 main with a number 3 Jib. Australia had some structural problems and chose to stay in the park as did Tangalooma who had a few last minute crew cancellations. Britannia set of first followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Alruth and finally Aberdare. We had a short but vocal meeting with The Mistake off Chowder, luckily everyone came away unscathed. The Beashel Bouy saw Britannia, Alruth, Aust IV, The Mistake, Aberdare round in that order with Alruth showing remarkable speed up wind. We caught Alruth just before Shark Island with both boats granning at the island. Clarke Is had Britannia, Aust IV, Alruth, Mistake and Aberdare. The Britannia and Mistake headed to the South Shore first whereas the others went towards Bradleys Head. Again, Alruth showed good upwind speed and rounded Chowder in first place followed by Australia IV, Aberdare, The Mistake and then Britannia who had a pit stop off Bradleys. We almost caught Alruth at Shark, however, the crew of Alruth performed a very brave and late gybe to hold us off to the finish at Clarke. Many thanks to all the volunteers both on and off the water.
