Race Results – 25 March 2023

Six skiffs contested the final race of the 2022-23 season and Autumn Point Score Heat 6 in a light, patchy easterly, with several point scores decided and Tangalooma leading early from the handicap start.

SFS Race Report Sat 25th March 2023 by Bob Chapman, 27 Mar 2023. Race 19 (final) of the 2022-23 Season and Heat Six (final) of the Autumn Point Score. 6 skiffs were on hand for today’s race with overcast skies, the possibility of rain and the prospect of a gradient onshore ESE breeze. By midday the breeze had developed from the east with rig choices varying between full size no.2 rig to no.1 rig. Being the final race, the outcome of several point scores would be decided today. The race got underway from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the no.2 East course into a light and patchy east breeze and run-out tide. Tangalooma (with ample crew this week) was first skiff away off 17 mins, followed by Britannia (16), Australia (13), Australia IV (7), then The Mistake and Yendys together off scratch. The breeze was variable in strength and direction for the beat up to Shark Island, with plenty of other race activity on that section of harbour to make for challenging sailing conditions. Tangalooma was first to round Shark Island for the square run back to Kurraba followed by Britannia, Australia, Australia IV, Yendys and The Mistake. Most skiffs set starboard pole spinnakers for this run while Yendys began the run with a port pole spinnaker to then gybe onto starboard for a better angle to the bottom mark. Britannia, Australia IV and The Mistake set ringtails. No change in positions down this run but the fleet did close-up with Yendys making up considerable time.

Tangalooma was first to round at Kurraba for the tight lead to Clark Island followed by Britannia, Australia, Australia IV, Yendys and The Mistake. The breeze was still variable at this stage and the boats that held up high early gained on the others that fell away and below course on approach to the island. Tangalooma continued to lead at Clark Island for the beat up to Shark Island followed by Britannia, Yendys, Australia, Australia IV and The Mistake. The final beat had its challenges with the fluctuating breeze and a large fleet of dinghies racing between Point Piper and Rose Bay. Yendys appeared to be sailing fast and making the right moves on this leg to then take the lead.

Yendys enjoys a fast ride into the finish.

Yendys was first to round Shark Island for the final run to Kurraba followed by Tangalooma, Britannia, Australia IV, Australia, and The Mistake. Yendys followed their same strategy with a port-pole set and then a gybe off Point Piper for a tighter angle and a fast ride to the finish to win by 4 mins ahead of Tangalooma, then Australia IV, Britannia, The Mistake and Australia, the last 4 skiffs finishing within 1 min. Britannia and Australia IV set a ringtail.

Tangalooma consolidates 2nd place.

Yendys emerged as the winner of the Autumn and Fastest Times point scores, Britannia winner of the Ringtail point score and Australia IV winner of the Season point score. So ends another season of 18-footer racing at the SFS, interestingly the South and SE courses were not sailed; from the 19 races conducted the East course was sailed 9 times, the NE course 8 times and the West course 2 times. In addition, “terminal dips” / swims were a respectable low in number, just 8 all up, 5 during a race and 3 post-race (ie after the finish or on approach to Careening Cove). With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Dom, Stewart, Russell, Bob, Chuck and Tomoko, Rob on WB 379. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next season.
