SFS Race Report Sat 25th February 2023 by Bob Chapman, 27 Feb 2023. Race 15 of the 2022-23 Season, SFS Queen of the Harbour race and Heat Two of the Autumn Point Score. We had 5 skiffs on hand to prepare for today’s race, with Britannia absent due to promotional commitments and Alruth unable to sail due to shortage of crew. Another sparkling summer’s day in the boat park with the expectation of a moderate nor’easter for the afternoon’s race. Some skiffs decided on no.3 rig while others decided on no.2. After a 10-minute delay, the race got underway from a handicap start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a moderate nor’easter of around 15 kts and the beginning of a small run-out tide. Tangalooma was first skiff away off 15 mins, then Australia (11), Australia IV (8), the Mistake (1) and Yendys off scratch. The skiffs enjoyed ideal sailing conditions for the beat down to the Beashel Buoy, with the breeze tending towards the ENE, along with the usual yacht and dinghy racing to negotiate along the way. Tangalooma was first to round the Beashel Buoy for the free run to Shark Island followed by Australia, Australia IV, Yendys and The Mistake. The skiffs enjoyed a good spinnaker run down to Shark Island where Tangalooma was first to round followed by Australia IV, Australia, Yendys and The Mistake, with the back markers making up time down this run. After a good run down to Clark Island, Tangalooma was first to round for the beat up to Chowder followed by Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake and Australia. The breeze had filled-in a bit at this stage, making for great sailing conditions, although Tangalooma seemed a little over-powered (or under ballasted). Yendys’ upwind prowess soon had them in the lead for the approach to Chowder. Yendys was first to round at Chowder with a good lead for the reach across to Shark Island followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Tangalooma and Australia. Both Yendys and The Mistake set peakhead spinnakers for this run, enjoying a fast ride in the process, with The Mistake closing the gap on Yendys as they approached the gybe mark. The Mistake was able to gain the inside position after the gybe to pass Yendys and hold the lead down to the finish off Clark Island, with Yendys in 2nd followed by Australia IV, Australia and Tangalooma. A good day to be out on the harbour in an open skiff. The Queen of the Harbour honours went to Stephanie Graves on The Mistake, along with Kerrie Boyd on Yendys, Tatiana and Anna on Australia IV, Coral and Nina on Tangalooma and unfortunately no ladies on Australia. With thanks to Barley for her preparation and organization on the day.
