Race Results – 22 January 2022
Nine skiffs contested the second race of the Australian Championship in a variable southeaster, with Yendys sailing high and fast to lead The Mistake and Australia IV around Clark Island.
SFS Race Report Sat 22nd January 2022 by Bob Chapman, 24 Jan 2022. Race 11 of the 2021-22 Season and Race Two of the Australian Championship. The breeze was variable from the southeast, overcast skies with the odd big cloud rolling-in to build up the wind pressure, sometimes substantially. Nine skiffs were on hand for the day’s racing using a mixture of rig selections with no.2 rig the popular choice while some skiffs opted for no.1 mainsail matched with different size jib configurations. The race got underway from a scratch start off Robinson’s Point on no.3 Southeast course into a 1216 kt southeast breeze and a run-out tide. The start was well contested with The Mistake best away off the middle of the line, Yendys to leeward and Myra Too near the pin-end, while Australia IV was best away from the boat-end. The skiffs with big sails were sailing at the top range of their rigs at this stage. The skiffs continued on starboard tack for some time before tacking onto port to lay up to Clark Island. Yendys sailing high with good speed moved into the lead half way up the beat.

Yendys was first to round Clark Island for the tight run to Taylor Bay followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Scot, Britannia, Top Weight, Tangalooma, Myra Too and Aberdare. The lead skiffs set small reaching spinnakers for this run to enjoy a good fast ride to Bradley’s Head, but not without some hard work by the crews to manage the puffy conditions. Unfortunately Scot experienced some spinnaker issues off Bradley’s Head during one of the puffs and suffered a terminal fill-up.

Yendys was first to round Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island in fresh conditions followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Tangalooma, Myra Too and Aberdare. Aberdare’s race came to an end whilst working out of Taylor Bay following a lee-cloth malfunction during a tack resulting in a terminal fill-up. The race was now reduced to 7 competitors with Yendys extending their lead as they approached Shark Island while Myra Too enjoyed the heavy going to move into 4th place. Yendys was first to round at Shark Island for the long run back to Kirribilli, followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Myra Too, Britannia, Top Weight and Tangalooma. The breeze began to lighten at this stage with Yendys setting a peak-head running spinnaker as did The Mistake whilst the following group also set peak-headers with all skiffs enjoying a good ride down to the bottom mark at Kurraba. Yendys was first to round at Kurraba in moderate conditions with a comfortable lead for the beat up to Clark Island followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Myra Too, then Tangalooma, Britannia and Top Weight all locked together as they rounded the mark. The remainder of the race was sailed in moderate conditions with Yendys able to maintain a comfortable lead up to Clark Island and then complete the run to the finish under ringtail for another well-deserved win, with The Mistake 2nd (ringtail) some 6 mins later, then another 6 min gap to Australia IV (ringtail), followed by a close finish for Myra too from Top Weight (ringtail), then Tangalooma and Britannia (ringtail). Yendys took the double to win on handicap from Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, The Mistake, Tangalooma and Myra Too. With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Stewart, Anne, Chuck, Michael, Bob, Bruce and Christophe, COVID Marshall Nicki, crew sign-in by Tomoko, Fiona on the raffle, with Dave and Ryan from Britannia on the B-B-Q. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next week.
