Race Results – 21 November 2020
Britannia sailed a strong opening leg to lead Heat 7 of the Spring Point Score in a puffy southeasterly, while Top Weight's day ended after contact with a moored yacht leaving Careening Cove.
SFS Race Report Sat 21st November 2020 by Bob Chapman, 23 Nov 2020. Race 7 of the 2020-21 Season and Heat Seven of the Spring Point Score. The overnight southerly moderated during the morning and by midday had begun to lighten off and go around to the southeast, as predicted. The weather was warm with eight skiffs on-hand for the day’s racing and full size no.2 intermediate the popular rig choice, with Yendys the exception opting to carry a big mainsail.

(courtesy MVS) The race got underway with from a handicap start off Robinson’s Point on the no.3 SE course into a puffy 12, 15 kt southeast breeze, at the start of the run-out tide. Britannia and Tangalooma were first away off 15 mins, followed by Scot (13), Aberdare (11), Australia IV (5) and then Yendys and The Mistake together off scratch. Unfortunately, Top Weight had an issue with a moored yacht whilst exiting Careening Cove which put an end to their day’s sailing. Britannia sailed a good upwind leg to Clark Island to be first around for the tight reach to Taylor Bay followed by Tangalooma, Aberdare, Scot, Australia IV, Yendys and The Mistake. The skiffs enjoyed a good spinnaker run to Taylor Bay when the puffs allowed, the wind pressure being a little inconsistent. Britannia was first to round at Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island followed by Tangalooma, Aberdare, Australia IV, Scot, Yendys and The Mistake. Plenty of traffic on the waterway for the Rose Bay section of this leg, with various yacht/keelboat courses converging in the bay. Britannia was first to round at Shark Island for the long free run back to Kurraba followed by Tangalooma, Aberdare, Yendys, Australia IV, The Mistake and Scot. Yendys was the obvious big improver after another good windward leg. Four skiffs set ringtails for this run. Britannia was first to round at Kurraba followed by Tangalooma, Yendys, Aberdare, The Mistake, Australia IV and Scot. Britannia and Tangalooma stood off to the left side of the beat up to Clark Island, while the other skiffs worked up the right-hand side towards Garden Island. As the skiffs converged at Clark Island Yendys emerged with a clear lead from the group that followed, all closely bunched with with Aberdare in 2nd place followed by Australia IV, The Mistake, Tangalooma, Britannia and Scot.

Back markers closing in at Kurraba (courtesy Adrienne Jackson) The breeze began to move into the east for the final run, where Yendys sailed a long starboard-hand leg before gybing over to port to lay the finish line for a very convincing 3 min win. However, the race for the minor places was a very close affair with a number of skiffs in the mix, with Aberdare hanging on to take 2nd place by 1 sec from The Mistake, then Australia IV, Tangalooma and Britannia. Unfortunately, Scot had an issue on the final run and suffered a terminal fill-up.
