Race Results – 20 November 2021

Eight skiffs including a returning Britannia raced Heat 4 of the Spring Point Score in a puffy southerly, with limit skiff Top Weight first around Clark Island ahead of Scot and Aberdare.

SFS Race Report Sat 20th November 2021 by Bob Chapman, 22 Nov 2021. Race 4 of the 2021-22 Season and Heat Four of the Spring Point Score. Pleased to report we had eight skiffs with many people on hand to prepare for today’s race and this kept the Covid and crew sign-in team quite busy. Good to see Britannia back in action but they were very busy putting the boat back together, while Top Weight were looking confident they would start their first race this time around. A light to medium southerly was forecast and rig choices varied between no.1 big rig on some skiffs to no.2 rig on others. The race got underway from a handicap start off Athol Bight on the no.4 South course into a 10-12kt southerly, at the tail end of a run-out tide. Limit skiffs Top Weight, Scot and Aberdare were first away off 15 mins while Britannia also off 15 mins was delayed in getting on the water and would be late to start. Tangalooma was next away off 14 mins then Australia IV off 8 mins, Britannia crossed the start line around the 2 min mark, with Yendys and The Mistake starting together off scratch. The breeze was a bit puffy and crews had to work hard to stay in-sync with the wind shifts.

Top Weight was first to round Clark Island for the run to Chowder followed by Scot, Aberdare, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake and Britannia. Various size spinnakers were set down this run and at various stages they were all the right size, the wind was a bit puffy. Aberdare was forced to sail a high course to keep clear of a ferry and unfortunately at the end of the run after

dropping their spinnaker needed to do a gybe to get down to the mark wherein a lee-cloth malfunction ended their race with a terminal fill-up.

Top Weight was first to round Chowder for the beat up to Shark Island, then Scot, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake and Britannia. The breeze filled-in up this beat getting up into the top of the range for the skiffs with no.1 rig. Top Weight continued in the lead and was first to round at Shark Island for the long run back to Kurraba Point, with Scot well positioned in 2nd then a gap to Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake, Tangalooma and Britannia. Again a variety of spinnaker sizes were set down this run with the skiffs under bigger spinnakers having their work cut-out at times in the fresher gusts, Scot closed the gap on Top Weight and by the end of the run the back-markers had made up ground on the two lead skiffs.

Top Weight continued to lead at Kurraba rounding first for the beat up to Clark Island just ahead of Scot, then Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake then a gap to Tangalooma and then Britannia. Scot moved into the lead on the last beat to round Clark Island first for the run to the finish, just ahead of Top Weight then a gap to Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake, another gap to Tangalooma then Britannia. Scot and Top Weight enjoyed a good spinnaker run to the finish off Kurraba Point to finish in that order a few minutes clear of Yendys (ringtail), Australia IV (ringtail), The Mistake, and then Tangalooma and Britannia. With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Stewart, Chuck and Michael, COVID Marshall Nicki, crew doco / sign-in team of Tomoko and Renata, Fiona on the raffle and Brendan and George from Team Aberdare on the B-B-Q. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next week.
