Eight skiffs under big rigs sailed the annual Queen of the Harbour race in a light easterly, with Tangalooma first around Shark Island just ahead of Scot after a challenging opening beat.

SFS Race Report Sat 20th February 2021 by Bob Chapman, 22 Feb 2021. Race 17 of the 2020-21 Season, Queen of the Harbour Race and Race One of the Autumn Point Score. Skippers and crews were greeted by overcast skies, warm and humid conditions and the prospect of a light easterly breeze for the day’s sailing. Eight skiffs were on hand with no.1 big rig the obvious choice as they prepared for the annual (and original, since 1926) SFS Queen of the Harbour race. With the skies clearing to bright sunshine, the race got underway from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the no.2 East course into a light easterly breeze at the end of a small run-in tide. The four limit skiffs off 15 mins had a well contested start, with Scot claiming the pin-end then Britannia, Tangalooma and Aberdare. Next away was Top Weight off 13mins, Australia IV 6 min and Yendys and The Mistake together off scratch. As the skiffs made their way to Shark Island the breeze appeared to favour the left side with the breeze bending around to the ENE.

Limit skiffs start, L-R, Scot, Britannia, Tangalooma and Aberdare (courtesy Adrienne Jackson) The beat up to Shark Island was quite challenging with the breeze eventually settling down towards the end of the beat, with Tangalooma first to round for the run back to Kurraba followed closely by Scot, then Top Weight, Britannia, Australia IV, Aberdare, Yendys and The Mistake. Yendys made up 4 mins on the limit skiffs on this leg while fellow scratch-marker The Mistake lost 30 secs to the limit skiffs. The skiffs enjoyed the free run down to Kurraba, with Tangalooma sailing a high course that would cost them the lead as the Scot sailed a more direct course to the mark. Scot was first to round at Kurraba with Tangalooma just 10 secs behind for the cracked-sheets leg to Clark Island, with a gap of 2 mins 30 secs to Top Weight, then Australia IV, Britanna, Aberdare, Yendys and The Mistake.

Scot continued to lead at Clark Island by just 15 secs from Tangalooma, then Top Weight, Australia IV, Britannia, Yendys, Aberdare and The Mistake. Yendys was just 7 mins 30 secs behind the lead skiffs at this stage. The breeze had filled-in slightly for the beat up to Shark Island as the two lead skiffs enjoyed a great tussle, while Yendys made up considerable time in taking a long port-hand tack to Point Piper then tacking over onto a right-hand lift that they carried all the way up to the lighthouse. Tangalooma was first to round Shark Island for the run back to the finish at Kurraba, just 20 secs ahead of Scot, then another 2 mins 30sec to Top Weight and Australia IV, another 30 secs to Yendys, then several minutes to Aberdare, Britannia and The Mistake. Tangalooma maintained their lead during a long hard chase by Scot all the way to the finish, but alas on crossing the line received no acknowledgement for their effort as they had been scored OCS after failing to respond to their individual recall at the start. Scot crossed the line to take the gun followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Top Weight, then a gap to Aberdare by 1 sec from The Mistake then Britannia. Congratulations to SFS Queen of the Harbour 2021 Betsy on the Scot, and to the princesses, Jenny (Yendys), Dilla (Australia IV), Carol (Top Weight), Kirsty (Aberdare), Ombeline (The Mistake), Elektra (Britannia), Ellie & Coral (Tangalooma). With thanks to Barley and her helpers for organizing the formalities on the day.
