Race Results – 19 November 2022
Crew shortages and a broken stay reduced the first Club Championship race to four starters, with The Mistake leading Britannia, Australia IV and Australia around the Beashel Buoy in a fresh nor'easter.
SFS Race Report Sat 19th November 2022 by Bob Chapman, 21 Nov 2022. Race 6 of the 2022-23 Season, Heat Six of the Spring Point Score and Race One of the Club Championship. Conditions were warm and sunny in the boat park, with a gradient breeze from the NE that was expected to be quite fresh during the afternoon. There were 7 skiffs intending to race and 2 in the boatshed. Unfortunately, crew shortages were an issue with Scot forced to stand-down from the day’s racing but able to pass on some crew to other skiffs. Yendys was well advanced into the rigging process when they were forced to stand-down, leaving 5 skiffs available to race. Rig choices tended to be for smaller sails. Unfortunately, Tangalooma had an issue whilst exiting Careening Cove that resulted in a broken stay wire and was forced to return to the SFS. The race got underway from a scratch start off Double Bay on the no.1, NE course into a fresh 18-20 kt nor’easter and run-in tide, with just 4 starters. The Mistake was best away from the pin-end of the line followed by Britannia, Australia IV and Australia. The skiffs enjoyed great sailing conditions for the first beat down to the Beashel Buoy, without the usual numbers of other sailing craft, plenty of large power boat activity and some quite bumpy conditions on the exposed sections of the harbour.

The Mistake was first to round the Beashel Buoy for the square run to Shark Island followed by Australia IV, Britannia and Australia. The Mistake set a small spinnaker for this run to manage the conditions comfortably, wherein they dropped the spinnaker at Shark Island before executing a round turn for the run to Clark Island where they ran under main & jib with the breeze having freshened. No change in positions on the downwind legs with The Mistake first to round at Clark Island for the beat up to Chowder Bay followed by Australia IV, Britannia and Australia. The Mistake was first to round at Chowder for the run to Shark Island with a comfortable lead from Australia IV, Britannia and Australia. The Mistake set a small spinnaker for the run to Shark enjoying a fast ride in the process. The Mistake dropped their spinnaker at Shark Island and after negotiating the gybe, re-set the small spinnaker for the run to the finish off Clark Island, where they recorded a comfortable win from Australia IV, Britannia and Australia. Well done to all crews for completing the course on a challenging day.
