Race Results – 19 March 2022

Seven skiffs contested the final Club Championship race of 2021-22 in a puffy southerly, with Yendys best away at the start and first around Clark Island ahead of The Mistake and Australia IV.

SFS Race Report Sat 19th March 2022 by Bob Chapman, 21 March 2022. Race 19 of the 2021-22 Season, Race Four of the Autumn Point Score and Race Three (final) of the Club Championship. We had seven skiffs on hand for today’s race, with long grass and soggy conditions in the boat park, some light rain and the prospect of a moderate to fresh southerly. Shortage of crew is still an issue for some skiffs with Covid being a factor. All skiffs rigged for the expected fresh conditions, with consideration for variations in wind strength at various sections of the course. The race got underway from a scratch start in Athol Bight on the No.4 Sth Course into a puffy southerly breeze and strong run-out tide (that included run-off from the overnight rain). The start was well contested with Tangalooma a little too eager, being over the line early then having to restart. Yendys was best away from the pin-end along with Australia IV and Britannia also well positioned, while The Mistake was forced to tack early and take some sterns to get into clear air, with the first beat up to Clark Island providing some good sailing.

Yendys was first to round Clark Island for the free run to Chowder Bay followed by The Mistake, Austraia IV, Aberdare, Scot, Tangalooma and Britannia. The skiffs enjoyed a good ride down this leg, with the occasional strong puff and plenty of breeze for the last section. Unfortunately, Tangalooma had some issues early on the run and suffered a terminal fill-up. Yendys maintained their lead down the run and was first to round at Chowder for the beat to Shark Island followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Aberdare, Scot and Britannia. The breeze was fresh for the beat up to Rose Bay where Yendys and The Mistake split tacks off Steel Point with Yendys sailing a long port leg towards the Light at the northern end of the island while The Mistake sailed a starboard leg up the Vaucluse shore. When they converged at the top of island The Mistake took Yendys’ stern, then on the final approach to the mark The Mistake tacked under Yendys bow to round first for the shy run to Kurraba, followed by Australia IV, Aberdare, Scot and Britannia. Plenty of breeze out of Rose Bay as the lead skiffs ran main & jib for the initial section of the run to Kurraba, then Yendys went for a peak-head reaching spinnaker while The Mistake set a small mastheader, with both skiffs enjoying the fast shy running conditions until the last section of the run when the breeze went to the SSW wherein spinnakers were dropped to complete the leg under main and jib. Unfortunately, Aberdare suffered a terminal fill-up when setting their spinnaker earlier on the run.

The Mistake was first to round at Kurraba for the beat to Clark Island followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Scot and Britannia. The breeze was well into the SSW with all skiffs laying up towards the island on a long starboard tack. The Mistake was first to round at Clark Island and set a small spinnaker for the run to the finish, followed by Yendys (peak-head spinnaker), Australia IV (peak-header), Scot (peak-header) and Britannia (mast-header). No change in places down this run with the skiffs finishing in the same order.

Australia IV enjoys the ride to the finish.
