Race Results – 19 February 2022
Seven skiffs each carried a contender for the annual Queen of the Harbour title in light southerly airs, with Tangalooma taking the early lead after picking the favoured left side of the course.
SFS Race Report Sat 19th February 2022 by Bob Chapman, 21 Feb 2022. Race 15 of the 2021-22 Season, the Annual SFS Queen of the Harbour race and Race Seven (final race) of the Summer Point Score. Seven skiffs were on hand for today’s race with overcast skies, the odd shower of light rain and a light breeze from the south. Most skiffs rigged for the light air conditions and each skiff carried at least one lady in their crew, with the following vying for the Queen of the Harbour title: Kirsty on Aberdare, Tatiana on Australia IV, Eloise on Britannia, Skye on Scot, Coral on Tangalooma, Ombeline on The Mistake and Kerrie on Yendys. The race got underway from a handicap start off Robinson’s Point on the no.3 SE Course into a light and puffy SSE-Sth breeze and strong run-out tide. First skiff away was Tangalooma off 13 mins, Aberdare (15) missed their start, Britannia (12), Scot (10), Australia IV (7) then The Mistake and Yendys both off scratch. Tangalooma enjoyed a good right-hand southerly lift early on the first beat, then the breeze went soft where some skiffs tacked onto port to head for right-hand side of the course. Meanwhile Tangalooma and Australia IV continued on starboard tack towards the left side and when the breeze eventually filled-in from the SE, the skiffs on the left side gained a big advantage. Yendys and The Mistake after encountering light winds early on the leg also worked the left side to pick up the new breeze.

Tangalooma was first to round Clarke Island with a big lead for the reach to Taylor Bay followed by Australia IV, Scot, Britannia, Aberdare, Yendys and The Mistake. The reach to Taylor Bay was tight with some skiffs not setting a spinnaker, Britannia carried a spinnaker for the later section of the leg to gain a place from Scot, while the 2 back-markers carried a spinnaker for the entire leg to make up time with Yendys moving into 4th place. Tangalooma was first to round at Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island followed by Australia IV, Britannia, Yendys, Scot, Aberdare and The Mistake. Light and fickle conditions on this beat with the run-out tide a big factor making for some challenging sailing for the approach to Rose Bay. It was slow sailing up this leg with the breeze moving into the east with the skiffs under bigger rigs gaining an advantage. The PRO made the call to shorten the course at this stage, the race would finish at the end of the next leg at Kurraba Point.
Tangalooma was first to round Shark Island for the square run to Kurraba followed by Australia IV, Yendys, Scot, The Mistake, Aberdare and Britannia. All skiffs initially set spinnakers on a port pole. Tangalooma ran a deep angle before dropping their spinnaker, gybing onto starboard to set another spinnaker and sail a square / direct course for the finish. Yendys, Australia IV and The Mistake sailed a free angle on port gybe towards Clark Island (some under ringtail) before gybing onto starboard and sailing a free angle to the finish, with the breeze now in the east. While Tangalooma sailed a more direct course to the finish, it was Yendys sailing tighter angles under maximum sail making good speed to sail into the lead and finish first by 3 mins from Tangalooma, just ahead of Australia IV, then The Mistake, Scot, Aberdare and Britannia. Kerrie Boyd is the SFS Queen of the Harbour for 2022. The Summer Point Score ended with Australia IV and Scot tied on 22 points, however, the tie was broken in favour of Scot having scored more 1st places.
