Race Results – 18 March 2023
Seven skiffs sailed the final Club Championship race in a steady nor'easter, with The Mistake rounding the Beashel Buoy first while keeping a close cover on Yendys, and Alruth in touch with the leaders.
SFS Race Report Sat 18th March 2023 by Bob Chapman, 20 Mar 2023. Race 18 of the 2022-23 Season, Race 3 (final) of the Club Championship and Heat Five of the Autumn Point Score. We had 7 skiffs on hand for today’s race with summer like conditions in the boat park, clear skies, and the prospect of an afternoon nor’easter. Some skiffs were short of crew, a factor in their rig selection, with most skiffs rigged for the expected fresh conditions later in the day. The race got underway from a scratch start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a moderate NE breeze and run-in tide. The start was well contested, with plenty of vocal activity, The Mistake was best away from the pin-end and Alruth from the boat end, unfortunately some skiffs were disadvantaged by the actions of others. The skiffs set off for the long beat to the Beashel Buoy in ideal sailing conditions into a steady 15-16 kt NE’er and reasonably flat water. The Mistake led the way but kept a close cover on Yendys for the entire beat with Alruth the beneficiary, sailing well and in good touch with the 2 leaders. The Mistake was first to round the Beashel Buoy for the square run to Shark Island followed by Yendys, Alruth, Australia IV, Britannia, Australia and Tangalooma (sailing with just 5 crew). The skiffs enjoyed a good ride down to Shark Island, no spinnaker carried by Tangalooma, understandably. The Mistake gybed their spinnaker at Shark Island to enjoy a very fast run down to Clark Island, followed by Yendys, Alruth, Australia IV, and Tangalooma. Australia dropped out of the race at this stage with a swim during the gybe followed by a visit to the Edwards’ rum dispensary. The Mistake was first to round at Clark Island into a solid breeze for the beat to Chowder Bay, followed by Alruth, then Yendys after an issue with their spinnaker drop, Australia IV, Britannia and Tangalooma. The Mistake held a good lead on approach to Chowder, but then suffered a gaff throathalyard failure where the mainsail & boom dropped down into the boat, they continued to sail on, it was not pretty, and after 4 tacks rounded the Chowder Bay mark with a useful lead, followed by Alruth, Yendys, Australia IV, Britannia and Tangalooma. The Mistake set a small spinnaker for the run to Shark Island making good ground with the boom occasionally kissing the water. Alruth did not set a spinnaker, but Yendys did and sailed into 2nd place. At the Shark Island mark, The Mistake dropped their spinnaker to do a round turn (unable to gybe with the boom in the boat), then reset the small spinnaker for the run to the finish. The Mistake continued down the final run under reduced sail to cross the line 2½ mins ahead of Yendys, then Alruth, Australia IV, Britannia and Tangalooma. Alruth was a clear winner on handicap from Australia IV and Britannia. On AHSSA rating for the Club Championship, The Mistake claimed first place by 12 secs from Alruth, then Yendys.
