Race Results – 15 October 2022

Mark Foy Day opened the club's 131st season with seven skiffs racing in a light easterly off Kurraba Point, celebrating the newly completed rebuild of the wharf and deck at Kirribilli.

SFS Race Report Sat 15th October 2022 by Bob Chapman, 17 Oct 2022. Mark Foy Day - Race 1 of the 2022-23 Season and Heat One of the Spring Point Score. Sunny skies and pleasant weather made for a welcome return to the boat park at Kirribilli for the start of another season of skiff racing at the SFS, the 131st season in fact. During the winter months the extensive task of rebuilding the wharf / deck area was completed with club now functioning as usual. Well done to those involved with the wharf refurbishment, it is a first class structure that should stand the test of time for many decades. We had 9 skiffs in the boat park and 1 in the boatshed with 7 skiffs ready to race, albeit some with reduced crew and others with new recruits to make up the numbers. In addition, the 12 ft skiffs joined in for their opening race. The breeze was light to moderate from the east with plenty of on-water activity expected in such ideal conditions. Big sails would be the preferred choice for most crews.

Here we go again. What a venue!

The race got underway after a short delay from a handicap start off Kurraba Pt. on the no.2, East course in an 8, 10 kt easterly and run-out tide. Tangalooma was first skiff away off 14 mins, followed by Australia IV (11 min), then Britannia, Scot, The Mistake (1 min) and Yendys (scr). Unfortunately, several skiffs were delayed in making the start, with Britannia and Scot short-handed and under reduced sail area than would normally be the case. Britannia missed their start by approx. 10 minutes Scot possibly 8 mins? Australia (6 mins) under #2 rig started just after the scratch boat.

Tangalooma was first to round Shark Island for the square run back to Kurraba, followed by Australia IV, Britannia, The Mistake, Yendys, Scot and Australia. Yendys and The Mistake set port poles to run towards Clarke Island before gybing onto starboard for the remainder of the run while the other skiffs set starboard poles for a dead square run to the bottom mark. Tangalooma and Australia IV came together at the bottom mark where Australia IV had the inside position to round first for the leg to Clark Island, with The Mistake and Yendys in good touch with the leaders, then Britannia, Scot and Australia. The bigger rigs obviously favoured the leading four skiffs.

Australia IV and Tangalooma had a close tussle on the leg to Clarke Island with Tangalooma moving into the lead at the critical stage to round the island first followed by Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake, Britannia, Scot and Australia. Yendys excelled on the beat up to Shark Island where they rounded first for the final run to the finish followed by Tangalooma, Australia IV, The Mistake, Britannia, Scot and Australia. Yendys followed the same strategy with a port pole set, as did Tangalooma but with a somewhat slower set. Australia IV and The Mistake gybed early and set their spinnakers on a starboard pole, with Australia IV adding a ringtail. Yendys gybed onto starboard for a clear run to the finish to take the gun followed by Australia IV, The Mistake, Tangalooma, Britannia (ringtail), Scot and Australia.

Yendys first to finish.
