Race Results – 14 November 2020
Eight skiffs enjoyed clear skies and a light easterly for Heat 6 of the Spring Point Score, with Scot sailing a strong first beat to lead the fleet around Shark Island.
SFS Race Report Sat 14th November 2020 by Bob Chapman, 16 Nov 2020. Race 6 of the 2020-21 Season and Heat Six of the Spring Point Score. Clear skies, warm air and a light breeze from the East/SE made for a welcome change from previous weekend racing. For the first time this season we had eight skiffs on hand preparing for the day’s racing with no.1 big rig the popular choice. The race got underway with from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the no.2 East course into a light 10, 12 kt easterly breeze, at the end of the run-out tide. Unfortunately, with the nice weather comes the additional waterway activity with plenty of fleet racing and pleasure craft out on the harbour making for plenty of confused boat wash and wave joggle. Britannia, Scot and Tangalooma were first away off 15 mins, with Tangalooma a bit under-rigged for the conditions. Aberdare (12 mins) was next skiff away, then Top Weight (14) having missed their start by 7 - 8 mins, Australia IV (5 mins) and then Yendys and The Mistake together off scratch. The limit skiffs had the advantage of assistance from the last of the run out tide as they worked their way down harbour to Shark Island, whereas the scratch skiffs started just as the tide was about to turn. Scot sailed a good first beat and was first to round at Shark Island for the long square run back to Kurraba, followed by Aberdare, Britannia, Tangalooma, Top Weight, Australia IV, Yendys and The Mistake. With the exception of Yendys, the other skiffs gybed over at the top mark to set a starboard pole spinnaker, while Yendys did a bear-away set on port pole then gybed onto starboard a third of the way down the run. Britannia, Australia IV and The Mistake set ringtails.
Top Mark action, Aberdare, Britannia and Tangalooma (courtesy MVS) Scot extended their lead on the run to round first at Kurraba for the windward leg to Clark Island, followed by Britannia, Aberdare, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Top Weight, Yendys and The Mistake, with the back-markers having made up time. Scot continued to hold a comfortable lead at Clark Island for the windward leg to Shark Island followed by Aberdare, Britannia, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake and Top Weight.

Australia IV leads back-markers after rounding Kurraba (courtesy Adrienne Jackson) Scot rounded Shark Island with a 3½ minute lead for the final square run to the finish, followed by Aberdare, Britannia, Tangalooma, Yendys, Australia IV, The Mistake and Top Weight. The final run was much the same as the first run, very square under starboard pole, with Britannia, Australia IV and The Mistake setting ringtails, and then Yendys setting a ringtail for the last third of the run. Britannia struck trouble off Bradley’s Head whilst sailing under maximum washing when adversely affected by boat-wash compounded by a lee-cloth malfunction that ended in a terminal fill-up. Scot went on to record a very clear win from Aberdare, Yendys, Australia IV, The Mistake, Tangalooma and Top Weight.
