Race Results – 14 January 2023

Seven skiffs contested the opening race of the Australian Championship in a fresh nor'easter, with Yendys leading The Mistake and Alruth around the Beashel Buoy after champagne sailing down the harbour.

SFS Race Report Sat 14th January 2023 by Bob Chapman, 16 Jan 2023. Race 10 of the 2022-23 Season, Race One of the Australian Championship and Heat Three of the Summer Point Score. Seven skiffs were on hand to prepare for the first race of the year to be sailed in ideal summer conditions with the prospect of a fresh seabreeze. Most skiffs opted for no.3 rig configuration while Australia IV opted for a heavily reefed mainsail. The race got underway from a scratch start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a fresh nor’easter with an easterly influence and the beginning of the run-out tide. The start was well contested with Alruth getting away well from the boat end with The Mistake and Yendys further down the line. The Mistake suffered a setback soon after the start with a broken jib sheet block but was soon back up to speed after the crew made a quick fix. Meanwhile Alruth was setting the pace up the middle of the beat with Yendys in close contact. The skiffs enjoyed some champagne sailing in the steady conditions with the benefit of little on-water traffic and just a few yachts racing at this early stage of the New Year. At the end of the long beat to the Beashel Buoy, Yendys was first to round for the run to Shark Island followed by The Mistake, Alruth, Britannia, Tangalooma, Australia IV and Australia. The skiffs enjoyed a fast ride downwind with the three-quarter wind angle, with Yendys first to gybe at Shark Island followed by The Mistake, Alruth, Australia IV, Tangalooma, Britannia and Australia for another fast run down to Clark Island.

Yendys lead the way down to the bottom mark but unfortunately had some issues with the spinnaker drop allowing The Mistake to round first at Clark Island for the beat up to Chowder Bay, followed by Yendys, Alruth, with Tangalooma, Australia IV and Britannia enjoying a close tussle, then Australia. The breeze had filled-in at this stage, quite steady but with more chop as the tide began to run harder.

The Mistake was first to round at Chowder to set a small spinnaker for the shy run to Shak Island, with Yendys also setting a small reaching spinnaker for this leg. The Mistake was first to gybe at Shark Island for a free angled run to the finish, setting a ringtail to go on to enjoy a comfortable win from Yendys, Alruth, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Britannia and Australia. Alruth’s efforts were rewarded with a win on handicap from The Mistake and Tangalooma.

Last run, The Mistake, Yendys and WB 379.
