Race Results – 10 October 2020

Mark Foy Day opened the 2020-21 season with just three skiffs, Australia IV, Aberdare and Scot, after lockdowns disrupted off season maintenance. Scot and Aberdare were delayed launching and missed their start.

SFS Race Report Sat 10th October 2020 by Bob Chapman, 13 Oct 2020. Mark Foy Day - Race 1 of the 2020-21 Season and Heat One of the Spring Point Score. Not the usual start to the sailing season, and in fact it was not until a couple of weeks earlier that anyone could confirm the H18s would be able to begin racing as per the scheduled start of the season. Fortunately, last weekend and with very short notice, Club Captain David Grinston with a team of volunteers were able to undertake a major boatshed clean-out and tidy-up, with a great outcome, well done to all concerned. Unfortunately, due to the premature shut down of the previous season and enforced lock down conditions imposed during the winter months our skiffs missed out on their usual off-season maintenance and repairs. Consequently only 3 skiffs were available to participate in Race 1, namely, Australia IV, Aberdare and Scot. The short notice of confirmation (possibly unexpected for some) to the start of sailing meant Tangalooma and Britannia were short of available crew, while Yendys, Top Weight and The Mistake are in “maintenance mode”. Hopefully a different story next week. The race got underway from a handicap start off Robinson’s Pt. on the no.2, East course into a 10 kt Easterly breeze in ideal conditions at the start of the run-out tide. Unfortunately, Scot and Aberdare were delayed in launching from Careening Cove and missed their start. According to the Race Officer’s report: “A perfect day for the start of the Historic 18 ft Skiff season with 3 boats off the line enjoying being back on the best harbour in the world. A short briefing in line with the pandemic protocols with David Grinston our Club Captain honouring our indigenous ancestors with the Acknowledgement to Country. With very little tide and a variable 10 knot Easterly the afternoon provided great conditions for our first race. Australia IV was back in fine form setting the first ringtail of the season, unfortunately no jug of rum was issued as presentation gatherings are not permitted under the current Covid 19 regulations. Thanks to all participants for complying with the Club’s Covid 19 registration and distancing requirements. See you all for H18 Spring Series Heat 2 on Saturday and 12’s sprint series on Sunday Good Sailing - Billy Loader SFS Commodore “ With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Michael, Bentley, Russell, Tomoko, Chuck and Bill; along with COVID Marshalls David and Michael. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next week.
