Saturday 10 February 2024 Club Championship Heat 2 There are some days when the starters cannot get it right. All morning the SE breeze was building from the south and when the line was set for a Number 3 SE course, the southerly bias in the line might have been OK. But, alas, as the fleet was lining up for a classic starboard scratch start, it was clear that the breeze had gone back to the east and a starboard crossing of the line was not on. Yendys, skippered by Andrew “Bucko” Buckland was first to the pin and on to a port tack to lead the fleet away on the work to Clark Island. Australia, with Marshall Flanagan on the helm, was well positioned, but was lacking sail area to be able to present a challenge to Yendys. Top Weight (standing in for Australia IV, still under repair) did best of the rest of the fleet, with its big new mainsail continuing to show the potential of this skiff.

By the time Yendys reached Clark Island, the breeze had settled into a nice 15 knots, but with a few holes to keep the crews on their toes. The run to Taylor Bay is a challenge in any breeze with shy spinnakers preferred for a true S’easter. When the Almighty positioned Bradleys Head, he must have done so with sailors in mind, just to be difficult. It is very easy to find yourself sucked down towards Athol and having to flag the kite to get around Bradleys and the cardinal mark into Taylor Bay. And then you find yourself very square with little time before the drop.

Yendys had increased her lead over Top Weight into Taylor Bay, but with spinnaker poles sticking, despite The Admiral’s best efforts with his latest gadget in the park, Yendys was forced to overstay the mark slightly before getting back on a wind on the short work to Shark Island. There, it was the biggest spinnaker available for what is always a great three-quarter shy run down to Kurraba. By then, the fleet had sorted itself out with a very pleasing display of good seamanship by all boats, many with new crew, on what can at times be a difficult course.

The Mistake, skippered by Jerry Tickner was looking like challenging for the podium when she was reminded of the old rule that you must finish with the same number of crew that you start with. A man overboard meant dropping the spinnaker and turning back for the swimmer with the loss of two or three places.

Back around Clark Island for the run home, Yendys was by now well ahead and elected to head out in to the main channel to avoid the Clark Island lee, to gybe at a time of her choice, and to track to the finish a wee bit hotter. With three or four minutes lead over Top Weight and Alruth, a shy kite was the sensible choice to take Yendys home for a convincing win in the second heat of the Club Championship.

On handicap, the good performance by Top Weight took first place with Tangalooma sneaking in for second. Alruth continued its good form with a third place.

On a day when the volunteers might have been expecting a call or two, it was great to see all boats cross the line safely. Well done to all crews and thanks, as always, to the tireless volunteers and starters for keeping up our wonderful traditions which, for some, extended on the Club deck well into the night with high spirits and post-race camaraderie. Special thanks to Christophe Favreau and Barley Stewart for use of their photos!
