SFS Race Report Sat 10th December 2022 by Bob Chapman, 12 Dec 2022. Race 9 of the 2022-23 Season, Heat Two of the Summer Point Score and the last race for 2022. We had 8 skiffs on hand to prepare for yet another day of racing under sunny skies with a light to moderate breeze from the east. The 12ft Skiffs were also in attendance for their NSW State Championship over the weekend. Most skiffs opted for no.1 big rig; a couple went for full size no.2 while Scot would carry a modest sized rig due to a reduced number of crew. The race got underway from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the no.2 East course into a light easterly and significant run-out tide for the beat up to Shark Island. Britannia was first skiff away off 17 mins, then Tangalooma (13) and Scot (13), Alruth (11), Australia (9), Australia IV (7), then Yendys and The Mistake off scratch. The early section of the first beat had the breeze lifting from the left side of the course but as the skiffs approached the middle and last section of the beat the breeze was affected by shifts from the right, posing many challenges for skippers and crews. Britannia was first to round Shark Island for the run back to Kurraba, followed by Alruth, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Australia, Scot, Yendys and The Mistake. Most skiffs gybed onto starboard before setting their spinnaker on a starboard pole, while Australia IV and Yendys opted to run under port pole towards Clark Island before gybing for a starboard approach to the bottom mark. The breeze had not filled-in for this run and the skiffs enjoyed a soft ride down to the bottom mark at Kurraba, with Australia IV and Yendys making up time sailing into the mark. Britannia was first to round at Kurraba for the tight lead to Clark Island followed by Alruth, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Australia, Yendys, The Mistake and Scot. As the skiffs approached Clark Island the breeze went to the right making for a wide rounding for some skiffs while Yendys was able to hold a high course into the island and make up time on the boats ahead. Alruth emerged as the leader after Clark Island for the beat up to Shark Island followed by Britannia, Tangalooma, Australia IV, Yendys, Australia, The Mistake and Scot. The breeze was puffy and patchy for this leg, with the approach into the island somewhat challenging. Alruth was first to round Shark Island for the final run back to Kurraba, followed by Britannia, Australia IV, Yendys, Tangalooma, Australia, The Mistake and Scot. The breeze had filled-in and moved to the ENE for the skiffs to enjoy a fast ride under starboard pole. Some skiffs with big rigs were now at the upper limit of their rig, with some appearing to manage the situation better than others. Then the fickle finger of fate stepped in, with 3 skiffs in quick succession succumbing to the elements, with all the washing up. The domino effect? or perhaps Bucko’s katabatic gust of the day? Unfortunately, for the volunteers in the RIBs it would be a long afternoon to retrieve Australia IV, Britannia and Australia from the briny. Meanwhile, Yendys pushed hard all the way down the run to grab the lead and take the gun by just 5 secs from Alruth, then The Mistake, Tangalooma and finally the conservative (but still upright and sailing) Scot. With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Wendy, Stewart, Bob, Glen, Russell and Tomoko, Rob on WB 379, with crew sign-on by Tomoko and Fiona on the raffle. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next year when racing resumes on 14th January 2023. Sorry, no photos available for this race, that’s the way it goes sometimes. -----Results for Sat 10th December 2022. Race 9
