Race Results – 9 April 2022

Seven skiffs contested the final race of the 2021-22 season, deciding both the autumn and season point scores, starting off Kurraba Point in a light east north easterly after morning showers cleared.

SFS Race Report Sat 9th April 2022 by Bob Chapman, 11 April 2022. Race 22 (final race) of the 2021-22 Season and Race Seven of the Autumn Point Score. Seven skiffs were on hand for today’s race, from which the outcome of both the autumn and season point scores would be determined. While all skiffs were fully crewed it was noticeable new faces had been recruited along with some of the crew from Aberdare (not racing today) filling-in on other skiffs, nice club spirit. After yet another mid-week deluge of rain it appeared that after some morning showers today’s race would be sailed in a moderate breeze from the east. Rig choices varied between big rig and full size intermediate. As race time approached and the skiffs were preparing to launch from Careening Cove, the rain showers began to clear while the breeze began to fall away noticeably. The skiffs made a slow exit from Careening Cove with the prospect the race would start in light air.

The race got underway from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the No.2 East Course into a light ENE breeze at the end of a small run-in tide, the harbour water had a distinct brown tinge, no yachts racing and very few pleasure craft to deal with. Tangalooma was first skiff away off 13 mins, then Scot and Britannia (12), Top Weight and Australia IV (10) and The Mistake and Yendys off scratch. With the breeze in the left, the skiffs sailed a long port hand leg towards the channel marker off Bradley’s Head in light puffy conditions, a follow the leader track, with a tricky section to negotiate in the wind-shadow off Bradley’s after which the breeze picked-up from the east for the remainder of the leg to Shark Island.

Scot was first to round Shark Island for the reach back to Kurraba followed by Tangalooma, Top Weight, Australia IV, Britannia, Yendys and The Mistake. Scot set a large spinnaker for this tight reach while Tangalooma set a small mast-head spinnaker, the skiffs that followed set various sized peak-head spinnakers. Initially it appeared that Scot’s spinnaker was a bit too large and they were sailing below the ideal course for the mark, while Tangalooma seemed to be well placed on a higher course. However, as the breeze eased for the last section of the run, Scot was able to carry their spinnaker to the mark and Tangalooma was in need of more downwind sail area, while the following skiffs were able to make up time on the boats ahead.

Scot was first to round at Kurraba for the close-hauled leg to Clark Island followed by Australia IV having turned just ahead of Tangalooma, then Top Weight, Britannia, Yendys and The Mistake. The leg to Clark Island was a main & jib reach, with Yendys passing Britannia to gain on the lead group. Scot was first to round at Clark Island with a good lead for the beat up to Shark Island, followed by Australia IV, Tangalooma, Top Weight, Yendys, Britannia and The Mistake. The sky had cleared and the breeze had settled in to the ENE at this stage, with the skiffs enjoying a good upwind sail.

Scot was first to round Shark Island for the run to the finish at Kurraba with a good lead, followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Tangalooma, Top Weight, The Mistake and Britannia. Scot set a peak-head spinnaker for this run (slightly smaller than used for the first run) with the wind angle now more suited

to sail a more direct course to the mark. Yendys set a large spinnaker in pursuit of Scot, with the following skiffs setting peak-head spinnakers. The Mistake put up a ringtail on this tight run and had it setting for some of the time. No change in positions down this run, although Yendys put in a great effort to make up time on the leader, but Scot held onto the lead to cross the line in first place followed by Yendys, Australia IV, Tangalooma, Top Weight, The Mistake and Britannia.
