SFS Race Report Sat 8th January 2022 by Bob Chapman, 10 Jan 2022. Race 9 of the 2021-22 Season and Heat Four of the Summer Point Score. Four skiffs were on hand for the day’s racing, the first race for 2022, with warm and humid conditions in the boat park and a moderate sea breeze expected for the afternoon’s racing. The race got underway after a 10 minute delay from a handicap start off Double Bay on the no.1 Northeast course into a light east / north-east breeze and run-out tide. Aberdare was first skiff away off 16 mins, followed by Tangalooma (13), Scot (12) and Australia IV (9). Scot appeared to be carrying the largest rig of the four skiffs, with the others sailing under full size no.2 rig, obviously expecting a good sailing breeze.
Aberdare leads Scot at the first mark.

Aberdare was first to round the Beashel Buoy just ahead of Scot for the run back to Shark Island followed by Tangalooma and Australia IV. The breeze was about 10kts and well east of NE at this stage. While the skiffs had enjoyed the benefit of the run-out tide in sailing down harbour to the first mark, it would be slow going when pushing against the tide for the downwind legs. The skiffs remained in close touch on the downwind leg to Shark Island, Scot moved into the lead to be first to the gybe mark for the run to the bottom mark off Clark Island where Aberdare regained the lead at the mark from Scot and Tangalooma and then Australia IV.

The close racing continued on the beat up to Chowder Bay in the light ENE conditions, where Aberdare rounded first just ahead of Scot, then Tangalooma and Australia IV.
Mark rounding at Chowder Bay, the contest between Aberdare and Scot continues. Photo by Wayne. Aberdare and Scot set spinnakers for the tight run to Shark Island, but as they approached the island the breeze moved around to the east, with Scot first to drop their spinnaker and sail on-a-wind into the new breeze, getting the jump on Aberdare in the process. Scot was first to round at Shark Island to set a port-pole spinnaker for the final run to the finish, with a good lead from the following skiffs that were sailing in close company at this stage. Scot moved ahead on the final run to take the gun by 2½ mins with Aberdare in 2nd just 5 secs ahead of Australia IV (under ringtail), with another 11 secs to Tangalooma in 4th place. With thanks to our on-water support team of Barley, Chuck, Robyn, Barry and Bill, COVID Marshall Nicki, Fiona on the raffle and Coral on the B-B-Q.
