SFS Race Report Sat 7th November 2020 by Bob Chapman, 9 Nov 2020. Race 5 of the 2020-21 Season and Heat Five of the Spring Point Score. Cold air and plenty of wind forecast from the south as six skiffs prepared for the day’s racing with small rigs the obvious choice. Plenty of activity in the park with Jacaranda season now in full bloom and the usual insurgence of tourists, plenty of spectators on hand to observe the skiffs rigging-up and launching. The race got underway with from a handicap start off Robinson’s Point on the on the no.3 SE course into a gusty 18, 25 kt southerly, at the start of a run-out tide. Only four skiffs made it to the start, with Aberdare and Tangalooma forced to retire back to the club after exiting Careening Cove. Plenty of wind on the start line with Britannia and Scot first away off 15 mins. Australia IV was next skiff due to start off 3mins, but just as they were ready to cross the line the fitting that attaches the jib sheets to the jib carried away and whilst they crossed the start line with all sails flapping it took a while to effect a repair and get underway, good effort undertaken in difficult circumstances. The Mistake was last skiff away off scratch. Britannia was well rigged for the fresh conditions and made good progress on the first beat to Clark Island to round first with a good lead followed by Scot, then The Mistake and Australia IV. Plenty of wind funneling out of Double Bay for the run to Taylor Bay and all skiffs elected to not set spinnakers in the marginal conditions at the beginning of the run. Britannia was first to round at Taylor Bay with a good lead from Scot, then The Mistake and Australia IV. Britannia continued to power along upwind to be first to round at Shark Island for the long reach back to Kurraba Point. Scot was next boat to round followed by The Mistake then Australia IV. The Mistake was able to carry a small masthead spinnaker for most of this run to move into 2nd place and make up time on Britannia. Britannia was first to round at Kurraba with a handy lead from The Mistake then Scot and Australia IV. The breeze whilst still fresh was very puffy and shifty on the final beat to Clark Island, challenging work for skippers and crews. Britannia was first to round at Clark Island for the run to the finish followed closely by The Mistake, then Australia IV and Scot. The Mistake enjoyed a fast ride under small spinnaker to sail into the lead and take the gun from Britannia, Australia IV and Scot. Well done to all skippers and crews for managing the testing conditions and completing the course. With thanks to our on-water support team of Bentley, Chris, Will, Barley, Tomoko, Russell, Chuck and Bill; along with COVID Marshalls David and Nicki. We look forward to seeing you down at the Squaddie next week.
