SFS Race Report Sat 6th November 2021 by Bob Chapman, 8 Nov 2021. Race 2 of the 2021-22 Season and Heat Two of the Spring Point Score. Seven skiffs in the boat park in preparation for the day’s racing in what appeared to be ideal conditions, with a modest sea breeze that was expected to fill-in as the day progressed. No.3 rig appeared to be the preferred choice for most skiffs with the exception of Yendys who opted for a larger no.2 mainsail. By launching time only 6 skiffs headed out to race with Top Weight unable to compete. The race got underway from a handicap start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a 15 kt NE breeze and strong run-out tide making for bumpy conditions. Tangalooma was first away off 15 mins, while Aberdare and Scot also off 15 mins were late in sailing across to Double Bay and missed their start. Scot was carrying a borrowed spare mainsail off Australia IV. Next skiff away was Australia IV off 7 mins, then The Mistake off 2 min and Yendys off Scr. The skiffs enjoyed ideal sailing conditions down the first beat with Tangalooma first to round the Beashel Buoy with a substantial lead for the first run to Shark Island. Next skiff to round was Aberdare then a gap to Australia IV, The Mistake and Scot rounding in close company and then Yendys. The skiffs enjoyed a fast square run down this leg, although Yendys had some spinnaker issues along the way. Tangalooma was first to gybe at Shark Island for the run to Clark Island with the breeze beginning to fill-in, followed by Aberdare, The Mistake, Australia IV, Scot and Yendys.

Tangalooma was first to round at Clark Island for the beat to Chowder Bay into a fresh breeze, followed by Aberdare, The Mistake, Australia IV, Yendys and Scot. Tangalooma continued to lead up the beat with the following skiffs having closed the gap. Tangalooma turned first at Chowder for the reach across to Shark Island, followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Aberdare, Yendys and Scot. Tangalooma did not set a spinnaker for this leg, while The Mistake set a small mast-head spinnaker to enjoy a fast ride across to the island and sail into the lead. The Mistake was first to gybe at Shark Island for the run to the finish followed by Tangalooma, then Australia IV, Aberdare, Yendys and Scot, with the skiffs enjoying a good run to the finish and crossing the line in the same order.
