SFS Race Report Sat 5th November 2022 by Bob Chapman, 7 Nov 2022. Race 4 of the 2022-23 Season and Heat Four of the Spring Point Score. Warm and sunny conditions in the boat park, with a light to moderate breeze from the east. There were 8 skiffs preparing to race, most with full size intermediate rig while some skiffs opted for a big mainsail. As race time approached, the breeze appeared to be stronger than forecast.

The race got underway from a handicap start off Kurraba Point on the no.2, East course into a variable 12-16 kt east-nor’easter and run-in tide. Tangalooma was first skiff away off 16 mins, followed by Britannia (15), Alruth (13), Scot (12), Australia IV (11), Australia (8, but late to start), The Mistake (1) and Yendys on scratch. Conditions up the first beat to Shark Island were settled with some skiffs heading across the harbour early while others worked the northern shore but then had to negotiate the lee under Bradley’s Head. Alruth was first to round Shark Island for the run back to Kurraba. The following skiffs included Scot, Tangalooma, Britannia and Australia IV, then Yendys, The Mistake and Australia. The breeze from the ENE provided an ideal angle for the skiffs to enjoy a fast ride on starboard hand under big spinnaker. Unfortunately, Scot suffered a broken gaff on the run and was forced to retire. Alruth was first to round at Kurraba with a good lead for the main & jib leg to Clark Island followed by Australia IV, Britannia, with The Mistake, Yendys and Tangalooma rounding together, and then Australia. No changes on the leg to Clark Island, with The Mistake and Yendys making up time on Britannia. Alruth continued to hold a comfortable lead for the beat from Clark Island up to Shark Island as the skiffs enjoyed good sailing conditions for this leg. The lead skiffs were suitably rigged for the weight of breeze at this stage; Tangalooma may have had a bit too much mainsail while the crew on Australia are settling in to managing their new charge.

Alruth was first to round Shark Island with a good lead for the run back to the finish at Kurraba, followed by Australia IV, Yendys, The Mistake, Britannia, Tangalooma and Australia. Alruth enjoyed the fast downwind run to cross the finish 4 mins ahead of Australia IV, then 2 mins to a close finish for The Mistake and Yendys after a good tussle down the final run, then Britannia, Tangalooma and Australia.
