SFS Race Report Sat 5th February 2022 by Bob Chapman, 7 Feb 2022. Race 13 of the 2021-22 Season and Race Five of the Summer Point Score. The 4th consecutive day of fresh winds from the south with five skiffs on hand for today’s race. The breeze was tending from the south-east with the odd strong puff under approaching low rolling rain clouds, with most skiffs electing to use their smallest rig while Britannia opted for their 4th (out of 5) rig configuration. The race got underway from a handicap start off Robinson’s Point on the no.3 SE Course into a puffy and shifty 16-24 kt SE breeze and run-out tide. Plenty of on-water activity on the harbour to contend with in the form of dinghy, keelboat and yacht races as well as the modern 18s running the first heat of their Australian Championship. Britannia was first skiff away off 16 mins, then Aberdare (15), Tangalooma (13), Scot (10) and Australia IV last skiff away off 9 mins. The skiffs enjoyed a challenging beat up to Clark Island in the puffy and shifty conditions.

First skiff away, others soon to follow.

Britannia was first to round Clark Island for the reach to Taylor Bay followed by Aberdare, Scot, Australia IV and Tangalooma. Britannia sailing with 7 crew and somewhat over-rigged for the fresh puffs on the upwind leg, elected not to set a spinnaker down this run, but they had plenty of sail up to do the job. Britannia was first to round at Taylor Bay for the beat up to Shark Island, just in time to join-in with the fleet of modern 18s as they started their race in close proximity. No change in positions at Taylor Bay and no issues with the modern 18s as they dispersed upwind very quickly. Plenty of wind for the beat up to Rose Bay and fortunately not a lot of interference from other craft on the course area. Britannia continued to hold a comfortable lead to round first at Shark Island for the run back to Kurraba, followed by Aberdare, Scot, Australia IV and Tangalooma. Plenty of breeze down this run and no need for Britannia to set a spinnaker making good speed under main & jib, while Australia IV set a reaching spinnaker and enjoyed a very fast ride to move into 3rd place and make up time on the leading skiffs.

Britannia was first to round at Kurraba for the beat up to Clark Island, maintaining a good lead from Aberdare, then Australia IV, Scot and Tangalooma. The breeze was still very puffy at this stage with big shifts from SSE to SE. No change in positions on the final beat with Britannia first to round Clark Island for the free run to the finish followed by Aberdare, Australia IV, Scot and Tangalooma. Britannia set a spinnaker for the final run to maintain a comfortable lead and finish first from Australia IV (spinnaker), Aberdare, Scot and Tangalooma. Well done all skippers and crews in completing another challenging day on the harbour.
