Race Results – 5 December 2020
Bob Chapman reports on Race 9 of the 2020-21 season, Heat 2 of the Club Championship. Seven skiffs raced in a light north easterly, with Yendys taking the early lead from The Mistake near Bradleys Head.
SFS Race Report Sat 5th December 2020 by Bob Chapman, 7 Dec 2020. Race 9 of the 2020-21 Season, Heat 2 of the Club Championship and Heat One of the Summer Point Score. Warm and humid conditions in the boat park with seven skiffs on hand for the day’s racing. Early predictions in the lead-up were for a moderate to fresh nor’easter, but on the day it was anything but, with an overcast sky and not much wind. The wind began to trickle in from the east by midday at around the same time as high tide. Rig choices were mostly for full-size no.2 rig while Yendys and The Mistake opted for no.1 rig. In addition to the Historic 18s the 12 foot skiffs were in force at the club to compete in the NSW State Championship hosted by the SFS over the weekend. To cap it off, the Rosman spectator ferry has returned, welcome back MV RADAR.
MV RADAR following the action at the top mark (courtesy MVS) The race got underway from a scratch start off Double Bay on the no.1 NE course into a light 8, 10 kt NE breeze and a run-out tide. Top Weight made a good start near the boat end with The Mistake and Yendys to leeward, while Australia IV was well positioned closest to the Committee boat. It didn’t take long for Yendys and The Mistake with their bigger rigs to move ahead of Top Weight, with Yendys then lifting up under the bow of The Mistake to move into the lead as the skiffs approached Bradley’s Head. Apart from sharing the course area with a fleet of Etchells the skiffs enjoyed good sailing conditions as they made their way down harbour with assistance from the run-out tide.

Yendys applies the lee-bow to The Mistake to move into the lead (courtesy MVS) Yendys was first to round the Beashel Buoy with a 3 min lead for the square run to Shark Island followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Tangalooma and Scot. Yendys and The Mistake set a ringtail down this run with The Mistake making up time as they approached Shark Island. Yendys was first to gybe at Shark Island for the free run to Clark Island followed by The Mistake, Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Tangalooma and Scot. Yendys was first to round at Clark Island for the beat up to Chowder with a 1min 20 sec lead from The Mistake, then Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Scot and Tangalooma. The breeze filled-in a little at this stage making for good progress to Chowder but no change in positions. Yendys was first to round at Chowder for the run to Shark Island holding her time on The Mistake. Yendys set a shortfooted peak-head reaching spinnaker while The Mistake set a larger no.2 spinnaker to make up time as the skiffs approached the gybe mark. Yendys was first to gybe at Shark Island for the short final run to the finish (ie to accommodate 12 ft skiff course finish), setting a ringtail to add sail area in lieu of the smaller spinnaker to go on and win by 59 secs from The Mistake, then Australia IV, Top Weight, Britannia, Scot and Tangalooma. The handicap result was a win for Top Weight by 8 secs from Britannia, then Yendys, The Mistake, Australia IV, Scot and Tangalooma.
