manoeuvre

Tacking

Turning the boat through the wind. One runner is released and the other tightened; the runner should only be released just as the tack begins, and the other runner needs to be on before the tack is complete. The jib is not released until it has stopped doing its work, then as the turn is complete the jib is pulled on reasonably quickly; the jib comes on before the main. The crew must keep the boat flat during the tack and gradually move their weight out as the boat picks up speed.
