Capsize procedure (sequence)
The manual's ordered capsize procedure, safety-critical. (1) Get to the surface as quickly as possible. (2) Count the number of people in the water; if you are short, someone is trapped or unconscious - find out who is missing and where they were when the boat capsized, and dive down to find them, untangling or cutting ropes and cutting the sail if needed. (3) Check for injuries that might restrict an individual, and put them on top of the sail, or on the hull if the boat is completely upside down. (4) Get someone to stand on the fin if the boat is on its side. (5) Get anyone with a medical condition into a sail or another secure position. (6) Once the crew are secure, gather the floating bits and pieces, and check for any loose spinnaker bags. (7) Everyone stays with the boat; a rescue boat is usually alongside within ten minutes. (8) Move anyone at risk, and any loose gear, onto the rescue boat. (9) Rig the tow: a rope tied to the mast and looped around the end of the bumpkin, preferably the tow rope from the towing vessel. (10) A couple of people stay with the boat during the tow to keep the fin in place, stop the wind getting under the sails, and fend off moored boats. (11) On the beach, take off all the sails and drag them ashore, remove the fin and the rudder, and de-rig. (12) Roll the boat upright, work it up the shore using the wave action until the fin case is above water level, then bail. (13) Load the gear back on, refit the rudder, and tow home with the plate down. (14) Back at the club, drop the mast, complete de-rigging, hose out with fresh water, dry the sails, drain the spars and check all the ropes.
