2019-20 Season Results & Trophy Presentation Finale (Part 4 of 4) Welcome to the final part of Presentation Night Covid-19 style. This week we announce our last round of season’s results, celebrate some special race ‘events’ and recognise some special contributions to SFS during the 2019-20 season. We look forward to celebrating in person once lockdown is lifted. Stay safe, stay healthy, keep your social distance and we’ll see you soon in the Squaddie!
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP A series of scratch races throughout the season: Held Saturday 30th November, Saturday 15th February and Saturday 14th March. The winner is... YENDYS
PORT JACKSON CHAMPIONSHIP Held on Saturday 15th February, the race celebrates and marks the end of the Summer Series. A special mention for Scot having borrowed the Boxing Kangaroo spinnaker off Top Weight, then went out and set it the wrong way up with the Boxing Kangaroo on its back. The race winner is... YENDYS
FASTEST TIME POINT SCORE Overall winner of the fastest times during Summer and Autumn Series point score races. The winner is.... THE MISTAKE
RINGTAIL POINT SCORE Awarded in memory of Graeme "Fergy" Ferguson, a stalwart of both the Club and skiff sailing, and who will be long remembered on the deck at the after-race presentations for telling us what a ringtail is. The photograph on the trophy is of Fergy doing just that. The winner is... BRITANNIA
Congratulations to all our race and point score winners. A worthy season, despite the unforeseen challenges. Well done to all! And now for some of our other 'worthy' winners...
NUMBER OF SWIMS IN A RACE
A message from Alan 'Robbo' Robertson “As the President of the Careening Cove Swimming Club, the feeling of being asked to hand over the Atlantis Trophy to another boat is one more of relief than anything else. I was beginning to kid myself that after a few years not winning this damned trophy, we could now concentrate more on making our boat go faster rather than just sailing it under the mast. However, it’s a sobering thought, hard as that may be for my crew, this year’s recipient (notice I didn’t say ‘winner’) is a boat I think we’ve only beaten off the stick when they’ve been horizontal and so yes, it can and does happen to the best of them. I hesitate to say congratulations, and nor would it be fair. Gear breakages, back-stays perhaps? This year’s winner is, gasp, YENDYS”
BROKEN WING TROPHY There were 3 single incidents for the Broken Wing Trophy this year. A notable mention goes to Britannia who, in Race 2 on 19th October, with a very fresh westerly, had a DNF due to losing their jib. The luff wire in the jib broke, a big disappointment as the jib was off a 3 handed 18' from late 1970s or early 1980s, only 40 years old!!! The trophy is awarded to AUSTRALIA IV as theirs was the silliest - a broken peak halyard on a light day... and they made no attempt to jury rig with a masthead halyard.
And finally, but by no means least, let's recognise our special contribution winners. These go to club members who have shown an outstanding contribution to the Club over the 2019-2020 season.
MEGHAN STEWART MEMORIAL TROPHY The Meghan Stewart Trophy was established in 2002 by Top Weight owner, John Tierney and his partner Pat Stewart. Their wish was to honour the memory of Pat’s daughter Meghan by initiating this wonderful memorial trophy. The trophy is awarded, each season, to a SFS member who has shown great enthusiasm, tenacity and a love for the SFS. JACK TANG, as a crew member for many years on the mighty Scot, has fulfilled all of the above criteria and has raised significant sponsorship donations. As such Jack is this year’s recipient.
TOP WEIGHT TROPHY This commemorative trophy is dedicated to Grant Taylor, sailor, Sailing Secretary and SFS board member from 2000 to 2006. In 2000 Grant commissioned the replica “Top Weight”, constructed by Robert Tearne, using the original line drawing supplied by Wright Shipwrights, Bulimba, Brisbane. Each year the trophy is awarded to the male or female, sailor, social member, volunteer or staff member who has contributed the most to the advancement of the Club. The 2019-20 season recipient is TOMOKO SUGA for her cheerful, abundant willingness and valued contributions to the SFS over several years, including crewing on skiffs and safety vessels, attending to weekly duties and documentation, selling merchandise and raffles tickets and general amenities.
We hope you have enjoyed being part of the SFS Virtual Presentation Nights. It has been a delight to celebrate these victories and recognise the good work that brings the SFS community together.
